Susan Nelson-Brown manages the Company’s Sales and Use Tax Division. In this capacity, she is responsible for developing tax planning strategies to assist clients in achieving current and future tax savings. She has worked for a number of major manufacturing clients to review audit assessments, file and monitor refund claims with various taxing jurisdictions and vendors, and negotiate favorable tax positions with taxing authorities. Her wide scope of services to clients includes providing reports detailing review procedures, findings, and recommendations; follow-up training of accounting staff; and alerting them of changes in regulations.

Active in the state and local tax field since 1978 when she joined the Illinois Department of Revenue as a revenue auditor. Subsequent to that she held the same position for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and became a district manager for DuCharme, McMillen and Associates. Susan then formed her own company which she managed successfully for almost ten years before merging it with Smart & Associates, LLP (F/K/A Strategis) in 1999, which spun-off her practice area in 2006 to Brown and Associates, LLC.

Susan is a graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. She has also completed various classes conducted by state taxing authorities and tax organizations. Susan serves on the Illinois State University Alumni Association Board of Directors. On the Alumni Board, she serves on several committees and chairs the Alumni Awards Committee.

As a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation, Susan served the Membership Admissions Committee as Chairman, and currently serves on the DFW Local Luncheon Committee. She also actively participates in the Federation of Tax Administrators, Southeastern Association of Tax Administrators, Western States Association of Tax Administrators, and Midwestern States Association of Tax Administrators.

Susan has worked on behalf of clients with sales and use tax issues in every state. As a result, she has extensive experience in dealing with auditors regarding the entire spectrum of audit problems and procedures.

Susan has been invited to speaking engagements regarding sales and use tax issues before the North Carolina Certified Public Accountants Members in Industry Conference, the Minneapolis Institute of Management Accountants, the North Georgia Chapter of Management Accountants, as well as other industry seminars.
